Identifying the Dimensions and Components of Citizenship Education of Primary School Students: a Qualitative Research

Abstract
Purpose: Citizenship education is one of the important topics in the field of social, political studies and educational sciences. Therefore, the current research was conducted with the aim of identifying the dimensions and components of citizenship education for elementary school students.
Materials and Methods: The current research was applied in terms of purpose and qualitative in terms of implementation method. The research community was citizenship education experts in 2018, according to the principle of theoretical saturation, the number of 22 people was selected as a sample using targeted and snowball sampling methods. The research tool was a semi-structured interview with 7 questions, whose validity was confirmed by the triangulation method and their reliability was obtained by the agreement coefficient method between two coders of 0.76. Data were analyzed with open, axial and selective coding methods in Maxquda software.
Findings: The findings showed that the citizenship education of elementary students had 3 dimensions, 8 components, 26 sub-components and 124 indicators; So that the dimensions include citizenship knowledge (with 4 components of political education, social education, cultural education and moral education), citizenship skills (with 2 components of interpersonal skills and macro-civic skills) and principles of citizenship education (with 2 components of executive processes and social comprehensiveness). They were. Based on the identified dimensions and components, a model of the dimensions and components of citizenship education for elementary students was designed.
Conclusion: According to the results of the current research, education specialists and planners can take an effective step towards improving the citizenship education of elementary students through the identified dimensions and components.
