Factors Affecting the Challenges of Parents and Adolescents with ADHD: a Qualitative Study

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to identify the factors
affecting the challenges of parents and adolescents with
ADHD. The present research method was qualitative and
thematic analysis with grand theory approach and semistructured interview as a data collection tool. The research
method is qualitative. In order to explain the concept of the
challenges of parents and teenagers and the factors affecting
it, a qualitative method with a grand-theory approach was
used. In this research, in the qualitative part using the
purposeful sampling method, 15 parents with ADHD children
in Tehran in 1401 who experienced conflict with the ADHD
child were selected as participants in the research. The sample
size was estimated based on reaching the data saturation
criterion. Factors affecting the challenges of parents and
adolescents with ADHD 7 main themes and 16 subcategories
related to each include; psychological consequences (sudden
and impulsive behaviors, violent behaviors, sensory
disturbances, negligence in performing duties); Psychological
approach (increasing self-confidence, strengthening and
encouraging, playing and physical activity, emotional
connection); educational approach (approach to medical
centers, appropriate training); family factors (genetic
problems, family problems); economic factors (economic
situation); social factors (lack of social support);
environmental factors (living conditions, parents' problems).
In general, the challenges of parents and teenagers are affected
by many factors such as the person, the environment, and
education.
