Abstract
Purpose: To examine the ethics and yogic lifestyle based
on the teachings of Patanjali in the book Yogasutra, as the
main and central book in the teachings of yoga, and to
show the ineffectiveness of the yogic lifestyle for human
life in the contemporary world.
Materials and Methods: This research was carried out
with a descriptive-analytical approach and with a library
method based on the study of the Yogasutra book and its
important interpretations and scientific books and articles
about ethics and yogic lifestyle.
Findings: The purpose of yoga is to break all yogi's
attachments to material things, and to suppress mental,
sensual and emotional waves in any form and degree. This
school does not pay attention to the various dimensions
of human life and existence, and presents freedom from
the primary matter or prakriti and all its manifestations,
including the mind, as its goal. This school believes in
reincarnation and karma, and also has a completely
ascetic lifestyle. For these reasons, yoga ignores the
various individual and social dimensions of human
beings.Based on this study, according to its purpose, the
yoga school has a completely extreme ascetic lifestyle
and ethics.
Conclusion: Since it seems impossible to have a
complete and healthy life in the contemporary world,
without taking into account the various aspects of the
individual and social life of a person, it can be concluded
that: ethics and yogic lifestyle are as compatible with the
conditions of human life in the contemporary world as It
is not compatible enough.
