The Relationship of Religious Orientation with Psychological Wellbeing in Elderly People: The Mediating Role of Spiritual Health

Abstract
Purpose: The present research was conducted to evaluate the relationship of religious orientation with psychological wellbeing, mediating by spiritual health. 
Materials and Methods: The outline of the present research was descriptive and correlational. The statistical population of the research included the elderly people of Zanjan, from which a sample of 238 people was selected using availability sampling. After, obtaining the contention of the participants, Alport’s Religious Orientation, Rif’s Psychological Wellbeing and Polotzin and Alison Spiritual Health questionnaires were distributed among them. The data was analyzed using 22nd edition of SPSS software, Pearson correlation method and regression analysis.
Findings: The results demonstrated that the internal religious orientation is in a positive and meaningful relationship with psychological well being and spiritual health. But, external religious orientation is in a meaningful negative relationship with psychological wellbeing and spiritual health. Although, the results of regression analysis indicated that the spiritual health has an explanatory ability in the prediction of spiritual wellbeing.
Conclusion: The results of the present research have cognitive and educational implications for elderly people which deal with some of the causes and the effects of spiritual health.
